With all aspects from fragility to intensity, the voice of Marie Vangen is both warm and present. Together with strong originals and a unique talent of expression, this makes Marie Vangen one of the most interesting newcomers from Northern Norway in 2016.
Marie Vangen's voice is appealing and direct, and as listeners we are invited into a warm and melodic universe. Gently lifted by some of the most sought-after musicians in Norway today, known from a.o. Mari Boine Band, Vamp and Jonas Fjeld Band, the music is given a delicate and interesting soundscape. The music may bring associations to artists such as Kari Bremnes, Sting and Sidsel Endresen, and is characterized by strong and personal texts with both humorous and serious sides.
Marie Vangen is 36 years old, and from Tromsø, Northern Norway. She has studied jazz at Sund folkehøgskole, and has performed as a jazz singer on a professional level through many years.
Seeing Marie Vangen’s performance on stage, it is not easy to understand that she has dedicated most of her adult life to a law career, both as a judge and to a phd in criminal law. Still, she never put the singing aside. Some of her performances includes shows at Nordlysfestivalen, Bodø Jazz Open, Varangerfestivalen, Grenseløsfestivalen and Barentsjazz. She has also had concerts in Russia with her own band and the Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra.
Marie Vangen was awarded "the dream grant" from Nordnorsk Jazzsenter in the autumn 2014, enabling her to follow up her artist career. In the springtime of 2016 she releases her debut EP "First Four".
