Release 23rd of Feb: FLOR

The band Marit Sandvik & Nova Onda has embraced the Brazilian music and MPB-tradition. Based in the very north of Norway, the six musicians have made their own blend.

Although it is far from Northern Norway to Rio de Janeiro, the band Marit Sandvik & Nova Onda has embraced the Brazilian music tradition and made it their own. Since 2013 the six musicians have developed their own sound, based on both jazz and MPB - Música Popular Brasileira. With its exquisite melodies and clever rhythms incorporated with extended harmonies, the Brazilian music combine in an irresistible potion that is both emotionally and intellectually appealing.

With the album "Flor", Marit Sandvik & Nova Onda launch their first CD-release, with both their own originals and arrangements by well known Brazilian classics. The album is recorded in Kysten Studio in Tromsø, with the support from Fond For Utøvende Kunstnere and Nordnorsk Jazzsenter. The recording is produced by Marit Sandvik & Nova Onda, mixed by Are Bredal Simonsen, and mastered by George Tanderø. The release is followed up by a tour to Oslo, Drammen and Asker in March, and more dates are to be confirmed in the autumn of 2018.

The six musicians all stand out as strong jazz artists from Northern Norway. Marit Sandvik has been a renown jazz singer and composer at an international level for decades, and has previously released several albums to great reviews both in Norway and abroad. Together with the jazz guitar player Øystein Norvoll, renown for his project "Bebop guitars", they both formed the core of the popular project "Bossa Nordpå" between 1993 and 2005. The drummer Simen Iversen Vangen has lived in Brazil, and also completed a masters degree in Brazilian music. Nevertheless, most people know him as the drummer of the rock band Madrugada through several years. The pianist Eirik Fjelde and the bass player Morten Steene are both having great success with the neo-soul band "thebandcalledOh!", while the saxophonist Ola Asdahl Rokkones combines his career both as a classical soloist with symphonic orchestra, and as a jazz musician in several different constellations.
